Am I A Good Candidate For Liposuction?
As with any surgical procedure, patients are often curious as to whether liposuction would be a good fit for them and whether it can accomplish their overall body contouring goals. Generally, liposuction can be an incredibly flexible procedure, and is able to target body fat in areas as diverse as the arms, legs, ankles, calves, torso, and even the neck and face. As such, liposuction can serve a wide variety of patients. Most of our liposuction patients:
- Have discomfort caused by areas of excess fat on the body
- Might have areas of fat on the body that are resistant to diet and exercise
- Might have areas of fat around the belly
- Might have areas of fat around the arms or legs
- Might have areas of fat in their hips or flanks
- Might wish to get definition in their abdomen
- Might have areas of fat around the neck or around the face
- Maintain a relatively stable weight
- Have realistic expectations about what this procedure can accomplish
- Are generally healthy enough for surgery
Liposuction is typically used as a body contouring tool, not necessarily as a weight loss tool (although Sanctuary Cosmetic Center has options for massive weight loss strategies). What Happens During Liposuction?
Liposuction is usually viewed as a minimally invasive plastic surgery procedure. We can perform liposuction at the Sanctuary Cosmetic Center’s surgical suite, located in Tysons, Virginia. Depending on patient comfort and the surgeon’s input, liposuction may be performed under deep sedation or local anesthetic in combination with a sedative. Depending on where you are targeting your liposuction procedure, the surgeon will make a small incision in the appropriate place.
Your surgeon will then insert a small tube called a cannula through that incision. The cannula is responsible for suction of unwanted fat, and it may sometimes be assisted by an ultrasonic, laser, or other energy-based device in order to achieve the best results. Modern liposuction focuses not only on removing fat but contouring that fat so that the newly slender areas of your body look natural and conforms to your overall look.
Once the appropriate amount of fat has been removed, the small incisions are closed and the patient is sent home to recover. Patients are usually able to return to most normal activities after roughly 7 days of recovery; however, the nature of liposuction means that swelling and bruising may persist for some time after that. Final—and optimal—results should be visible within 3 to 4 months, depending on the treated area.
Liposuction Alternatives
For various reasons, not everyone who wants to eliminate stubborn areas of fat is a good candidate for liposuction surgery. Due to the high demand for this type of result, however, there are some non-surgical liposuction alternative procedures that are quite popular today. These procedures are either done in conjunction with liposuction or done alone if a patient is not a good candidate for liposuction. These non-surgical techniques have the benefit of little to no downtime and a quick recovery.
Precision Tx Laser
At Sanctuary Cosmetic Center, we are pleased to offer our patients alternative treatments to traditional liposuction. Precision Tx is a new laser treatment for smaller area contouring. Though the treatment is idea for facial definition, such as the jawline, neck or jowls, it can also be used on the body, mainly the upper arms and abdomen. The laser’s bidirectional fiber tip targets fat cells and the heat created stimulates collagen production resulting in retraction of the skin. The results provide loss of fat and tightening of skin. This procedure generally takes one hour and patients experience little to no downtime.
CoolSculpting
The CoolSculpting device uses cold for a dual purpose: to numb any discomfort felt by the patient and break down fat cells that are more susceptible to cold than your skin. CoolSculpting in Tysons, VA, is especially popular because it lets patients return to normal activities quite quickly. The results take several weeks to manifest fully, as it takes some time for the fat cells to fully break down and be re-absorbed by the body.
Liposonix
An alternative to CoolSculpting and Liposuction is a procedure called LipoSonix. This device uses ultrasound energy to break down the cell walls of fat. In that way, it’s similar to CoolSculpting, but is generally more comfortable for the patients. LipoSonix may take several weeks to manifest full results, and more than one session may be necessary to get the ideal results. However, patients are able to achieve subtle body contouring without the need for surgery, and that’s appealing to a wide variety of people.
