Wrinkle Wars Botox vs. Dysport

Botox vs. Dysport

Botox and Dysport are neurotoxin treatments designed to smooth wrinkles and help women and men achieve a more refreshed and youthful appearance.

They are composed of slightly different chemical variations of botulinum toxin, but work in the same way. In fact, both products are injected into underlying muscles to temporarily block nerve signals and limit muscle contraction.

Despite this similarity, the wrinkle wars of Botox vs. Dysport rages on. So, is there a clear winner between the two injectables or is it a matter of personal preference?

Here’s everything you need to know about Botox vs. Dysport.

Botox vs. Dysport – What’s the Difference?

When it comes to Botox vs. Dysport some differences exist between the two injectable treatments.

Botox is manufactured by Allergan and first gained FDA-approval in 2002. While Dysport is produced by Galderma and received its clearance from the FDA in 2009.

Additionally, Dysport diffuses more than Botox, making it an excellent option for larger areas like the forehead.

Finally, Dysport’s onset occurs at 3-5 days, while Botox starts working by 4-7 days. Accordingly, patients see wrinkle reduction a bit sooner with Dysport.

Split-Face Study

The efficacy of Botox vs. Dysport was evaluated in a clinical study on crow’s feet.  To determine which neurotoxin was superior in reducing wrinkles, half of the face was treated with Botox and the other half was treated with Dysport. Both patients and researchers were unaware of which product had been administered to either side.

When patients were asked to contract their faces as much as possible, Dysport demonstrated greater ability in relaxing wrinkles. What’s more, 2/3 of patients preferred the results on the side of the face that was treated with Dysport.

Botox vs. Dysport – Is One Better Than the Other?

Despite the above findings, other studies suggest that dosing, rather than the product itself, is key to Botox and Dysport efficacy.

Accordingly, many leading injectors offer both products and the choice between the two often comes down to personal preference.
