What Is an Eye Stye?
An eye stye is a swollen, painful bump that occurs on the eyelid. It is different than a chalazion, which is a non-painful eyelid bump.
What Causes a Stye?
Eyelids contain oil glands, mostly near the eyelashes, that are exposed to dirt and dead skin cells. When these substances build-up, they can clog eyelid glands and enable the growth of bacteria. This ultimately results in swelling, inflammation, and discomfort that are indicative of a stye.
How to Get Rid of an Eye Stye?
An eye stye will typically resolve on its own within a few days. However, there are a number of ways that patients can assist the healing process and alleviate their symptoms.
Here are four home remedies for patients that want to know how to get rid of an eye stye.
1. Warm Compresses
Take a clean wash cloth and wet it with warm water. Then gently press the compress to the affected area for approximately 10 minutes.
You can repeat the process up to four times a day until the stye has cleared.
2. Over-the-counter Ointments
Over-the-counter ointments can provide additional relief to individuals and should be applied sparingly. These topical products typically contain antibiotic properties that work to eradicate the bacteria within the stye and promote healing.
3. Wash Eyelids
Using warm water and a tear-free baby shampoo or saline solution, carefully cleanse eyelids to help drain and flush out bacteria.
4. Take Necessary Precautions
When attempting to get rid of an eye stye, you should take care to avoid popping or squeezing the bump, which can cause the spread of bacteria and infection.
It’s also extremely important to forgo eye makeup until the stye is completely gone. Failure to do so, could lead to irritation, complications, and prolong the healing process.
