All About Restylane

What Is Restylane?

Restylane is a line of temporary dermal fillers that are most commonly used to restore facial volume, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and minimize other signs of aging.

Unlike synthetic fillers, Restylane is produced with naturally occurring hyaluronic acid and works with your skin to restore volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Restylane products are intended primarily for cosmetic purposes, and there are several Restylane products available to address the signs of skin aging and address specific cosmetic concerns.

Restylane is a clear gel placed under the surface of the skin by a licensed injector or dermatologist.

Which Type of Restylane Is Right For Me?

Several Restylane products are available to restore volume and minimize signs of aging.

Although all Restylane products are formulated with hyaluronic acid, each form of Restylane works differently to address specific aging and cosmetic concerns.

Your injector can help you to determine which form of treatment with Restylane is most effective in addressing your aging and skincare concerns.

Restylane and Restylane-L

Restylane and Restylane-L are designed to restore volume, and both products are used for lip augmentation procedures.

For anesthetic purposes, Restylane-L contains lidocaine, a numbing agent and pain reliever.

With the exception of lidocaine, Restylane and Restylane-L utilize the same formula.

Restylane Silk

Restylane Silk is a smooth, gel form of Restylane designed specifically for use in lip augmentation procedures.

In addition to its use in lip augmentation procedures, Restylane Silk is ideal for smoothing wrinkles and fine lines around the mouth.

Restylane Lyft

Restylane Lyft was developed to restore volume to the hands, a key area in which skin aging and loss of volume are difficult to address with standard dermal fillers.

Restylane Lyft is also used to restore volume and fullness to the cheeks, midface, and to minimize the appearance of severe skin folds.

Restylane Refyne

Restylane Refyne was formulated to treat nasolabial folds, the lines and wrinkles that form between the nose and mouth.

In addition to its use in restoring fullness between the nose and mouth, Restylane Refyne is commonly used to reduce marionette lines, the fine lines and wrinkles that form between the corners of the mouth and chin area.

Restylane Defyne

Restylane Defyne was developed to treat the same skin aging concerns as Restylane Refyne, but targets deeper lines and wrinkles.

What Are the Key Differences Between Treatment with Restylane and Juvederm?

Restylane and Juvederm dermal fillers share many similarities and are typically injected into the same areas of the face to address common signs of skin aging.

Restylane and Juvederm are both hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers that your injector places underneath the surface of the skin to restore volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Treatment with each procedure yields similar side effects and shares similar results in minimizing skin aging and cosmetic concerns.

The primary difference between Restylane and Juvederm is based on the length of time each product was developed to last, with Juvederm injections typically producing results that last longer than treatment with Restylane on average.

For this reason, Restylane injections are typically available at a lower price point than treatment with Juvederm fillers.

While the difference between Restylane and Juvederm is minimal, a licensed injector can best advise which procedure will most effectively address your aging and skincare concerns based on your needs and cosmetic goals.

Procedure and Aftercare

Restylane injections are typically performed in under thirty minutes in the comfort of our office.

Prior to treatment, your injector will prepare the treatment site with an antiseptic solution and may numb the area with a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort.

Restylane injections are typically painless and placed underneath the surface of your skin using a small needle.

Restylane is a non-invasive procedure that requires no incisions and little to no downtime.

Following treatment with Restylane, you may experience minimal swelling or redness around the injection site. Post-injection swelling and redness will gradually minimize over the course of one week.

How Long Does Treatment with Restylane Last and When are Results Visible?

Full results following Restylane treatment are visible in about one week.

Restylane’s effects vary based on individual factors, including injection site and the rate at which the compound is metabolized by the body.

Generally speaking, Restylane injected into the lips produces effects that last for an average of six months, while Restylane products injected into other areas of the face and body produce results that last eighteen months on average.

Side Effects of Restylane

Although adverse reactions to Restylane are rare, there are a few common side effects patients may experience following treatment with Restylane products.

Possible side effects of Restylane include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Headache

Most side effects associated with Restylane injections resolve without treatment or medical attention.

If you experience severe or worsening symptoms following treatment with Restylane, contact your doctor or seek immediate medical treatment.

How Much Does Restylane Cost?

The cost of treatment with Restylane varies based on injection site, location, and the number of units your treatment protocol requires.

Average rates per milliliter (full syringe) of Restylane filler range between $600 to $650.

Because Restylane is used primarily to address cosmetic concerns and skin aging, the treatment is not covered by insurance, but financing options may be available.

Is Treatment with Restylane Right for Me?

Restylane is a low risk, widely used dermal filler with a high rate of satisfaction among patients for restoring volume and minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
