A Great Guide To Injectables: 8 Terms You Should Know

The world of injectables can initially seem very overwhelming. Especially, when patients come across terms, such as hyaluronidase, that they don’t readily recognize.

To help make sense of Botox and filler vocabulary, we’ve created a great guide to injectables in Northern Virginia that features every term you should know.

8 Terms Referring To Injectables That Everyone Should Know

Board Certification

The term board certification is used to denote a medical doctor who has undergone specialized training in a particular area of medicine and passed rigorous examinations demonstrating his or her knowledge and expertise.

For example, a board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Rostami or Dr. Naz, is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

FDA-Approval

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is responsible for determining the safety and efficacy of medications, products, and treatments. As such, an injectable treatment must undergo FDA trials to receive clearance.

Injectables

Injectables refers to a group of cosmetic treatments, including Botox and dermal fillers, that are injected beneath the skin.

Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin is a purified protein, derived from Clostridium botulinum bacterium, and the main ingredient of Botox in Northern Virginia.

Filler

dermal filler is gel-based product that is injected beneath the skin to add volume and plump tissue.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring sugar molecule found in skin and joints. Because of its ability to easily attract and hold water, it is one of the most common ingredients in dermal fillers.

Numbing Agent

Injectable treatments often involve a topical or local numbing agent, such as lidocaine, that is applied prior to injections or included in the filler’s formulation.

Hyaluronidase

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that can be injected to partially or fully dissolve a hyaluronic acid filler.
